The State Office is responsible for asylum-seekers, for refugees from civil war, for ethnic German immigrants, for Jewish immigrants and for persons applying for asylum within the framework of nation-wide humanitarian measures.
Schleswig-Holstein takes in some 3.3 % of such persons coming to Germany; the State Office provides them with accommodation, food and support in many branches of everyday life for a limited period of time.
In addition, the State Office is independently responsible for initiating preparatory measures for repatriation and/or deportation and provides administrative assistance in such measures to immigrant authorities in Schleswig-Holstein and implements them on their behalf. Such measures are required whenever foreigners are under obligation to leave the country but are not willing to leave Germany voluntarily.
